Ah, El Niño – the unpredictable climatic phenomenon that can turn the snowy wonderland we crave into a bit of a weather rollercoaster. The Canadian Rockies are known for their phenomenal winter landscapes, but this year, it seems like Mother Nature is playing a game of hide-and-seek with the snowfall.

If you've been feeling a bit down lately with the low snow conditions, you're not alone. As someone who lives for the thrill of floating on powder, the low snow conditions are a little disheartening. It's like waiting for your favourite band to hit the stage, only to find out they're tuning their instruments backstage a bit longer than expected.

While these weather conditions may test our patience, they also present a unique set of opportunities for growth, connection, and exploration.

Maintaining Stoke during El Niño

Some of my favourite days at Nakiska Ski Resort include shredding their world-class groomers. With the low snowpack during this seasons El Niño in the Rockies, this is the perfect opportunity to work on personal technique and embrace a season of growth in your riding.

Challenge Yourself

While we may prefer knee-deep powder, carving on groomers has its own set of challenges. Think of it as an opportunity to fine-tune your skills. Every turn becomes more deliberate, and your balance is put to the test. Instead of seeing it as a setback, view it as a chance to become a more versatile and resilient rider.

Use the opportunity to focus on skill-specific training off the slopes. Whether it's honing edge control in a controlled environment or practicing tricks on a trampoline, there's always room for improvement.

Lessons in Variable Terrain

El Niño often brings about diverse and variable terrain conditions. Enrolling in lessons allows individuals to work closely with experienced instructors who tailor lesson plans to maximize the benefits of these conditions.

Whether you're a novice seeking to build a solid foundation or an experienced rider aiming to elevate your abilities, taking lessons during El Niño transforms the challenges into valuable learning experiences, ultimately sculpting more versatile and resilient riders. And remember, it’s never too late to start learning a new activity!

Connect with Community

Nakiska is a hub for winter sports culture. From events like the FIS AUDI Ski Cross World Cup to live music on select weekends, Nakiska fosters a vibrant snow sports community. Stay connected with the local snow sports community by organizing or participating in events.

The snow sports community is a tight-knit family, and we're all in this together. Reach out to your buddies who share your frustrations, and organize group rides.  From snowboard movie nights to skill-sharing sessions, these gatherings can create a sense of anticipation for better conditions. The camaraderie can inject a burst of energy into your riding spirit.

Make it Fun

Switch it up -- wear them jeans! Bring in some style and steeze. If winter is gonna show up as spring, then break them hoodies out and embrace the opportunity to show off your style.

Bring out the entire family and make it a full day of adventures. Nakiska offers loads of fun activities that cater to everyone -- from tubing to nearby family-friendly hikes, there’s opportunities for everyone to get outside.

Regardless of the weather, spending time in nature and doing a sport you love with like-minded people, brings endless mental health benefits. Let’s dig deep and stay positive and hopefully the snow will come -- when it does, we'll be ready with our sharpened skills and a stoke higher than ever. Until then, let's keep the winter spirit alive on the slopes, no matter the depth of the powder beneath our boards.

Stay stoked, shredders!
