If you are feeling overwhelmed or unsure of how to find grounding, disconnecting from technology may be the exact thing that you need. And what better way than to escape it all than with an adventurous digital detox destination in the Canadian Rockies?
Living in today's modern world, most of us are connected to technology in one way or another, unless you completely live off-grid. While the internet and smartphones have undoubtedly made our lives more convenient, they have also become a source of constant distraction, stress, and anxiety - even when we are participating in our favourite outdoor activities.
What is a Digital Detox?
In 2001, the stars aligned, and smartphones finally met the internet. Suddenly, the possibilities were endless - from sending email attachments on the go to hosting impromptu video conferences from the palm of your hand. The game had officially changed.
We are now three decades into the internet era and discovering that it's essential for our overall well-being to take extended breaks from our screens. Digital detoxing, the intentional act of taking a break from screens, is becoming increasingly popular as a method of self-care. This break can be an hour, a day, or even a week, depending on your needs and what works best for you.
Digital Detox Destinations in the Rockies
Choosing a digital detox destination with limited or no cell service, will give you the optimal results to enhance your well-being. Whether you're looking for a rustic backcountry lodge or a luxurious retreat, these destinations have something to offer for anyone seeking a reset.
1. Glamp at Camp Moose Trail
Looking for an off-grid, rustic glamping destination for your digital detox? Immerse yourself in a world that's free from digital distractions and experience the magic of being truly present in the moment at Camp Moose Trail. This glamping experience in Golden, British Columbia offers a unique balance of comfort and outdoor adventure, allowing you to be in nature without sacrificing the comforts that you're used to.
Owners and operators Mike, Lindsay, Harry, & Winston will welcome you with open arms and make you feel like an honourary member of their family. From the moment you arrive, their warm hospitality and genuine care will engulf you with a sense of belonging and a desire to extend your digital detox.
All levels of campers are welcome, from seasoned backcountry enthusiasts to those who have never slept in the woods before. Whether its a digital detox vacation with friends or a romantic getaway, Camp Moose Trail will check all the boxes for an authentic experience. The best thing is that Camp Moose Trail operates year-round and is near one of my favourite resorts, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, home to BC's best skiing and mountain biking.
2. Weekender at Anchor D Outfitting
Hidden along the picturesque Cowboy Trail, just an hour away from Calgary, Alberta lies Anchor D Outfitting—a hidden gem that embraces the rich heritage of cowboy culture. At Anchor D, the focus is on disconnecting and immersing yourself in ranch life. As there's no cell service in the mountains and service is intermittent at the ranch, it's a true cowboy experience that will leave you longing for the simplicity and authenticity of a life untouched by constant digital distractions.
With a variety of horseback vacation options, top-quality horses matched to your ability, and two cozy cabin rentals, Anchor D Outfitting operates year-round and provides a unique and unforgettable experience that is perfect for a digital detox destination.
This family-owned and operated business is a haven of warmth and hospitality that will effortlessly make you forget about constantly checking your phone. As you step onto the ranch, you'll instantly feel the welcoming embrace of Dewy, Katie, and the ranch crew who live on the property. They share meals together, creating a vibrant and boisterous atmosphere reminiscent of a big, loving Newfie family (I'm officially homesick now!).
3. Canoe & Hike at Lake Louise
Make your digital detox retreat an epic Canadian adventure with a day spent in the famous setting at Lake Louise. This iconic destination invites visitors to immerse themselves in the serenity of nature, far removed from the distractions of modern technology. Spend your day canoeing across the crystalline waters of Lake Louise, surrounded by towering peaks and dense forests, or opt for a scenic hike along the picturesque trails in the area.
4. Lake Minnewanka Backcountry Camping
Escape the digital chaos with Parks Canada's backcountry camping in Banff National Park, Alberta. This natural playground is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Picture snow-capped mountains against lush green forests, offering endless camping opportunities.
Banff National Park's hit-or-miss cell service zones become your gateway to disconnect. To access any Canadian National Park, snag a Parks pass. Opt for a refreshing digital detox by renting a kayak and paddling to one of Lake Minnewanka's three backcountry campgrounds: Aylmer Pass Junction (Lm8), Aylmer Canyon (Lm9), or Mt. Inglismaldie (Lm11). Securing a Parks Canada reservation is a must, and rest assured, cell service won't follow you into the backcountry. Choose your adventure and if you're up for more, explore other backcountry campgrounds farther down the lake.
5. Unleash your Sense of Adventure in Assiniboine
Right in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, the Assiniboine Lodge and area is the perfect digital detox destination for those seeking an unforgettable wilderness experience. Located in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, the lodge is the oldest backcountry ski lodge in North America, and has drawn visitors from all over the world for nearly a century.
The lodge is only accessible by hiking, skiing, or helicopter and has limited Wi-Fi and cell phone coverage. You'll be surrounded by alpine meadows, glaciers, and pristine wilderness, providing the perfect setting for a digital detox retreat.
Surrounded by towering peaks, the Lodge offers a variety of activities for guests to enjoy year-round. In the winter, visitors can explore the area's unparalleled backcountry skiing and snowshoeing trails, while in the summer, hiking, mountaineering, and fishing are popular options. Guests can also enjoy guided tours and workshops, including photography classes and naturalist-led hikes. Accommodations at the Lodge range from cozy private rooms to spacious cabins, all featuring wood-burning stoves, comfortable furnishings, and spectacular views of the surrounding wilderness. Meals are served in the Lodge's charming dining room, where guests can enjoy delicious, locally-sourced cuisine and swap stories with other adventurers.
On my digital detox, we embarked on a one-day hike to reach the Naiset Huts where we stayed for two nights before hiking back on the fourth day. The Naiset Huts are self-guided and self-catered dorm-style lodgings located 600 meters away from Assiniboine Lodge.
7. Ski at Nakiska & Stay at Kananaskis Lodge
Located in Alberta, Canada, Nakiska Ski Resort is a great location for a day full of mountain adventures for your family. Only an hour drive from the city, Nakiska is Calgary's closest mountain and offers the best beginner and intermediate terrain in the Rockies. Primarily a family ski hill, Nakiska offers additional winter activities such as tubing and snowshoeing, right on the resort.
Right next door to Nakiska is Troll Falls - an easy, beautiful hike featuring waterfalls that is accessible year-round. There are ample hiking trails in the area that can be done in winter months including the epic Green Monster hike.
When you're done with all the outdoor exploration, you can experience the ultimate luxury stay at Pomeroy Kananaskis Lodge, just down the road from Nakiska.
