Fernie History
Heiko Socher, a visionary forester, and his wife Linda played pivotal roles in shaping Fernie's destiny. Their efforts culminated in the expansion of Fernie's terrain, unveiling breathtaking bowls and challenging runs that would capture the imagination of skiers worldwide. Originally named "Fernie Snow Valley," the resort underwent a transformative phase in 1997 when it was acquired by Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR). The resort's unique history even includes a Hollywood connection, as it served as the fictional Kodiak Valley ski resort in the film "Hot Tub Time Machine."
The Griz
The Griz Legend tells of a boy born in 1879 during a harsh winter in a grizzly bear's cave in the mountains near Fernie. After a fierce battle with the bear, the boy emerged victorious, later spotted by locals wearing a bear coat. Years later, skiers witnessed a massive figure, now known as "The Griz," shooting an enormous musket into the clouds, causing heavy snowfall. This legendary figure is celebrated every February during the annual Griz Festival, honouring his role in Fernie's exceptional powder conditions. Today, the tradition and the snow continue in his name and you'll discover many references to this legend.
