Families from around the world flock to our corner of the Earth. As an outdoor mama, I've learned a few tips and tricks that have helped me to make the most of our outdoor family adventures in the Rockies.

Having a plan is key

There's no such thing as winging it in this neck of the woods. Planning is key so prepare to spend some time researching our rocky mountain region. Identify the activities that interest your family the most, such as hiking, canoeing, or wildlife observing. Look into popular trails, camping spots, and attractions to create an itinerary that suits your family's preferences and capabilities.

Also, check the weather forecast and any relevant park regulations or permits required for your chosen activities. Both Kananaskis Country and Banff National Park require park passes. Remember, you may not always have cell phone service in parts of the Canadian Rockies so knowing where you're going is essential.

Choose an outdoor family adventure that works for everyone

In the family adventure planning stage, it's essential to consider the varying fitness levels and abilities of your family members. Luckily, the Canadian Rockies  offers a plethora of family-friendly activities that cater to different fitness levels while still providing unforgettable experiences.

Consider options such as Nature walks, horseback riding, or renting bicycles for scenic rides. Look for child-friendly hiking trails with manageable distances and exciting features like waterfalls or viewpoints.By researching options, you can ensure that everyone in your family can participate and create lasting memories together.

Pack appropriate gear & layers

Having the right gear and clothing is essential for a comfortable and safe outdoor family adventure. Dress in layers to accommodate fluctuating temperatures, and always carry rain jackets and good grip boots/runners. Don't forget hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. If you plan on camping, invest in quality tents, sleeping bags, and camping equipment suitable for the weather conditions in the Rockies. It's also wise to bring a backpack with essentials like water bottles, snacks, a first aid kit, maps, and a compass.

Be mindful of your baby's needs, pack enough diapers and baby food, and make sure you have a baby carrier that is comfortable for you and your baby.

Choose the right outdoor activities. Not all outdoor activities are suitable for babies, so it's important to choose activities that are appropriate for your little one's age and ability. Hiking, sliding, and picnicking are great family-friendly options that are suitable for babies of all ages.

When it comes to family adventures, having the right gear preloaded in your vehicle and ready to go can make all the difference. As a family, being prepared and having the right gear can enhance the experience and make it more enjoyable for everyone.

Stay adaptable & safety first

When venturing into the wilderness, safety should be your top priority. Ensure that each family member understands basic safety protocols, including how to identify and react to potential risks. Teach children about wildlife encounters, such as bears or moose, and how to respond calmly and responsibly. Familiarize yourself with the proper use of bear spray and ensure it's easily accessible.

Also, inform family and friends of your itinerary and expected return times for added security.

Keep hydrated & nourished

Family adventures in the Rockies can be physically demanding, so it's crucial to stay hydrated and nourished. Pack enough water for everyone and bring water purification methods for refills during hikes. Carry energy-rich snacks like granola bars, nuts, and dried fruits to keep everyone fuelled. For longer hikes or camping trips, plan and pack meals that are nutritious, easy to prepare, and suitable for the outdoors.

Embrace leave no trace principles

Preserving the beauty of the Canadian Rockies is a responsibility we all share. Teach your family the principles of Leave No Trace, which include packing out all trash, respecting wildlife and their habitats, and staying on designated trails. Encourage your children to observe and appreciate Nature while leaving it undisturbed for future generations.

Here are some essential items that can be preloaded in your vehicle and ready to go for your next family adventure:

  1. A good quality baby carrier: A baby carrier is essential for keeping your little one close and comfortable while exploring on your family adventures. Make sure to choose a carrier that is comfortable for you and your baby and that fits your baby's age and size. A stroller won't cut it on many of the trails around here!
  2. Hiking poles: These are easy to have stored in your vehicle already. I use poles that are extendable so they take up minimal space.
  3. An umbrella stroller: I personally don't use a stroller often and when I do, it's the bigger one that comes apart and folds. I'll choose a carrier over strollers for most of our adventures. But I keep a smaller, umbrella stroller in my Jeep and it has come in handy more than once.
  4. Diapers, wipes, and baby food: Having enough diapers, wipes, and baby food is essential for any family adventure. Pack enough for the day and a few extra, just in case.
  5. Sunscreen and insect repellent: Sunscreen and insect repellent are essential for keeping your family protected from the sun and bugs. Make sure to pack enough for the day, and remember to reapply as needed.
  6. First aid kit: A first aid kit is an essential item to have on any family adventure. Make sure to pack it with essentials such as band-aids, pain relievers, and antiseptic wipes.
  7. Water and snacks: Staying hydrated and fueled is important for both you and your baby. Pack enough water and snacks for the day, and make sure to pack extra, just in case.
  8. Warm clothing and rain gear: The weather in the Canadian Rocky Mountains can be unpredictable, so it's important to be prepared for any eventuality. Pack warm clothing, rain gear and an extra blanket for your baby.
  9. A charged cell phone: But be aware that there are many locations in the Rockies that are outside the service area.
  10. A good quality camera: Capture the memories and moments of your family adventure by having a good quality camera ready to go. This may be your cell phone!

Having the right gear can make all the difference in enjoying and making the most of your family adventure experience.

The Takeaway

Planning ahead, choosing the right outdoor activities, packing essentials, being prepared for any weather, taking breaks and keeping safety in mind are key factors to ensure a successful and enjoyable family adventure in the Canadian Rocky Mountains with your baby.
